OPEN ART 2015 MUNICH

We are present the artist´s 4th solo exhibition in the gallery.

After his successfull 2th solo show with Halcyon gallery in London.

We represent Ernesto Cánovas since 2012.

Our next art fair with the artist:
24-27 Sept. 2015, viennacontemporary, Vienna
22-25 Oct. 2015, YIA Art Fair, Paris

1-6 Dec. 2015, X-Contemporary, Miami

Spanish artist, Ernesto Cánovas employs a multi-layered practice of
painting, drawing, printmaking and photography. Cánovas artworks
are heavily worked and only realisied through careful contemplation.
Exuding an ironic and somewhat discerning sence of obscurity, the
subject matter is not always clarified. By combining the vocabulary
of Pop Art with sources from old and new media, he successfully
produces work that captures snapshots of the present-day,
presenting the viewer with a duality from wich the perceived
truths are questioned and refashioned.

Alienation Peace, 2015
Mixed media and resin on aluminium
40 x 58 cm

Ambacher Contemporary is proud to present an exhibition of brand new works
by the young and successful London-based spanish artist Ernesto Cánovas, born
1971 in Barcelona.

The title of the exhibition, "Alienation Peace" goes well with our time ...
Cánovas develops the themes and techniques he explored in his previous
solo exhibitions and demonstrates once again his artistic virtuosity.

His works are highly elegant paintings, as well as glamorous wall-objects.
At first they could remember us glazed ceramic tiles - Cánovas may be culturally
influenced by the noble and traditional Iberian- Moorish tile art - before we detect
the wood or the aluminium base, of wich the artist uses the textures as abstract
patterns or glossy surfaces for his pictorial design.

Cánovas subjects relate to modern history, they are social critic to classy or
romantic, his mode of expression is contemporary and belong manly to pop art.
He collects and selects photographs from “all-round sources”, and after he subtly
manipulated them virtual, he prints them with a self-elaborated artisanal technique.
By applying alternating layers of resin, painting processes and well-reflected
cutouts, the photos become transformed, the subjects gradually anonymised
and generalised and also sometimes get completly abstract.
In this way, his works acquire a very strong symbolic power and a visionary quality,
they are ahead of the times and belong to the day after tomorrow.

Between abstraction and the figurative, fact and fiction, they remind sometimes
of the slightly nostalgic and fuzziness, other ones of the completly abstract works
by Gerhard Richter. Cánovas uses the modern-day flood of images in order to take
a critical stance on current affairs that fulfil the role of a collective memory.
But he isn´t a reporter, he deliberately conceals everytime all the contexts of wich
only the feeling definitly persists. Finally, the work-titles help us to replace our visual
and emotional experience in its historical background.
